Here is the current line-up of Cultural Assistants. If you see one around ELI, feel free to stop them to ask a question, or to just say hi!


 

Chantel

Chantel Luu is a Sociology major with a minor in Law & Society. With her multicultural experience growing up as a Canadian with Vietnamese and Chinese influences, Chantel has become an advocate for cultural diversity. She is involved as the President of the UBC Vietnamese Student Society, a social and cultural club that meets with students and creates events to bring awareness to Vietnamese culture and cuisine. When not on campus, Chantel enjoys creating all kinds of arts and crafts, trying new ice cream shops and traveling the world!

Nelly

Ernielly

Ernielly Leo or “Nelly” is one of the Head Cultural Assistants and a student in the faculty of Land and Food Systems at UBC majoring in Global Resource Systems. She is passionate about sustainable development and issues regarding food waste. She is involved with UBC Sprouts, Canada’s largest student run food co-op, and you will often see her carrying random vegetables and fresh fruit around campus! During her down time, Nelly loves reading a good book, listening to music, and taking baths. Feel free to say hi and ask her about some of the best food places in Vancouver.

Isha

Isha Jain is an Arts student from India majoring in Anthropology and also hopes to minor in archaeology. She enjoys travelling, playing football, photography and listening to music. She loves learning new languages and about different cultures (fun fact: she speaks 5 languages!). She’s inquisitive by nature and is always up for an adventure!

James Binks is an Anthropology major in the process of planning his Honours Thesis. He is obsessed with how the world’s different environments, languages, arts, and philosophies shape different cultures, subcultures, and individuals. To satisfy this interest he has travelled to every Canadian province and more than thirty countries! When not rumbling around on a bus on the other side of the world he loves enjoying British Columbia’s awesome nature on skis, in boots, or floating on his back on the ocean.

Jessica

Jessica Lai is a Political Science major as well as an International Relations minor. She was born in Taiwan but was raised in Vancouver. Jessica is really passionate in things such as learning about cultures around the world and forming connections with different people. When she isn’t at the English Language Institute, you can find her playing Ultimate Frisbee or attempting to find the next best restaurant! Feel free to say hello to her if you see her around!

Marcus

Marcus Jung is a Global Resource System major. He spends much of his time coaching and leading workshops and is an avid volleyball player. He loves to watch documentaries and musicals, and will always try restaurant specials. Catch him around ELI with his winning smile!

Mercy

Mercy Wanalo is a Food Nutrition and Health major in the faculty of Land and Food Systems. She is passionate about food sovereignty and hopes to use the knowledge that she will gain to help eradicate malnutrition in low income communities. Mercy enjoys cooking, travelling, spending time with people and outdoor activities. Scandal is her favourite TV show! You can catch her biking around campus when it’s not raining!

Natalie

Natalie Dee is an English Literature major with a minor in Anthropology and a UBC alumni. Born and raised in Vancouver’s west side, you can usually find her with a coffee and book in hand. She spends her time attending concerts and writing about them, hitting the slopes, and planning her next great adventure.

Njoki

Njoki Mburu is majoring in sustainable agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa through UBC’s Global Resource Systems program. She was born in Nakuru, Kenya then moved to Nairobi when she was eight years old, before moving to Germany to complete her last two years of high school. She is immeasurably enthusiastic about dance (especially hip-hop and Afro beats), poetry, and reading novels. her academic passion lies in the study of community engagement in environmental conservation. She enjoys learning about different people’s cultures and personal reflection in the Nitobe Gardens on campus.

Ray Le graduated with a degree in English and French Literature. He loves interacting and sharing with people from all over the world. He is a gigantic hockey fan, foodie and expert air guitarist. In his spare time, Ray loves making puns, silly dancing to Taylor Swift and playing board games! He can’t wait to meet everyone (and perhaps, maybe take a selfie?)!

Sia Jan-Abu studies Microbiology and is interested in topics including but not limited to; health, community building, and social justice. Sia is passionate about women’s empowerment as well as increasing access to education as a crucial factor in creating positive change.

Stella Zhou is a Geography major studying Environment and Sustainability. She is passionate about cities and collects maps as a hobby. As a result, she loves travelling and also enjoys cuisines from all around the world. Stella is a Nintendo fan, and she plays all sorts of video games. In her spare time, she likes to cook at home or discover some trendy brunch places in town with friends. Make sure to say hi when you see her around! She loves to chat about food, games and what to do in Vancouver.

Tim Song is a Geographical Science major. He loves sushi, photography, saxophone, and himself. Although his major is Geographical Sciences, he has a secret love for history, especially 20th century history and Chinese history. You can find him on weekends taking his dog for a walk, taking pictures of our beautiful city, giving his friends relationship advice, or driving slightly over the speed limit while listening to mellow music.

Vicky Chen is an English Literature major with a minor in Psychology. She has an affinity for dogs and will pet yours if you let her. Yulanda Lui is a Gender, Race, Sexuality & Social Justice major with a minor in Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies. She loves to write poetry and you can find her writing and sharing her work at cafes and open mics. Yulanda is passionate about social justice and hopes to help make this world a better place. Talk to her about social change, Vancouver vegetarian restaurants, and the best music spots in town!
